Made in the USA, Ovasitol®PLUS is our most recommended metabolic health supplement for non-pregnant women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and men with metabolic syndrome.  The PLUS formulation of Ovasitol contains alpha-lactalbumin, chromium picolinate, and vitamin D for additional metabolic support, even beyond that of Theralogix' original Ovasitol®.  Alpha-lactalbumin is a whey protein that enhances the absorption of myo-inositols, increasing the bioavailability of this metabolically crucial insulin second messenger.

Like original Ovasitol, Ovasitol®PLUS also contains inositols in the same naturally balanced 40:1 ratio of 4,000 mg of myo-inositol and 100 mg of D-chiro-inositol daily.  Inositols, naturally found in legumes, grains, nuts, and fruits like oranges and cantaloupes, help the body metabolize glucose and maintain normal blood sugar.

Two particular molecular variations (isomers) of inositol, myo-inositol and d-chiro-inositol, function as metabolic second messengers for insulin.  In healthy ovaries, these inositol isomers are found in a 40:1 ratio (40 parts myo-inositol to one part d-chiro-inositol).  As recommended by an International Obstetrics and Gynecology Consensus Conference, Ovasitol®PLUS contains both of these important inositol isomers in precisely this same healthy 40:1 ratio.

Clinical research suggests a beneficial role for inositol supplementation, particularly in metabolic conditions involving insulin resistance:

  • polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) – a common condition characterized by enlarged cystic ovaries, irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, acne, and hirsutism

  • metabolic syndrome – characterized by weight gain, truncal obesity, hypertension (high blood pressure), hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), and hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar)

  • mood disorders – depression, anxiety, and panic disorder – (additional research required to confirm inositol’s possible role in combating mood disorders)

One of the most studied benefits of inositol supplementation if in women with PCOS.  PCOS is an endocrine disorder and leading cause of female infertility, affecting up to 15 percent of women of childbearing age.  According to the World Health Organization (WHO), PCOS is the most common cause of ovulation failure.  Despite the well documented prevalence of PCOS, the condition is often under-diagnosed, with up to 70 percent of patients with PCOS being unaware of having the problem.

Women with family histories of diabetes are at increased risk of developing PCOS.  WHO acknowledges that women with PCOS are also more prone to develop other serious health conditions including diabetes, hyperlipidemia (elevated cholesterol), hypertension (high blood pressure), heart disease, and possibly even endometrial (uterine) carcinoma.

PCOS is associated with irregular menstrual periods, excess androgen hormone secretion, abnormal facial hair growth (hirsutism), acne, belly fat (truncal obesity), insulin resistance (pre-diabetes), and ovarian cysts.  In PCOS, irregular periods are commonly associated with absent ovulation and resulting infertility.  Diagnostic criteria suggest that doctors consider PCOS in patients with two or more of these signs and symptoms.

Typical recommendations for treatment of PCOS include dietary restrictions, weight loss, and medications, depending upon the fertility desires of individual patients.  Metformin is an anti-diabetic drug used to treat PCOS, particularly in obese patients with insulin resistance (pre-diabetes).  However, metformin commonly causes unpleasant gastrointestinal side effects, frequently leading to the need to discontinue the drug.  Clearly, other safe and effective treatments are needed.

Fortunately, for many PCOS patients there may be an alternative.  Inositol supplementation has been shown to be effective, improving hormonal balance, metabolism, menstruation, and ovulation.  In a meta-analysis of 26 randomized controlled clinical research trials including over 1,600 patients, use of inositols resulted in greater normalization of menstrual cycles and normalization of blood sugar, as compared to placebo.  By these measures, inositol supplementation was found to be equivalent to metformin in women with PCOS and insulin resistance.  Researchers agree that "Inositol is an effective and safe treatment in PCOS showing non-inferiority (statistical equivalence) in most outcomes as compared to the gold standard treatment -- metformin.”

Obesity and metabolic syndrome appear to be increasing in the US.  An outspoken national public health advocate recently stated, "The more metformin they prescribe .. the more diabetes we have,” also stating, “regulatory agencies must stop hiding science from us when it clashes with the commercial ambitions of the pharmaceutical industry.”  Have we become unnecessarily dependent on pharmaceuticals, when natural supplements may work as well?

Ovasitol®PLUS is formulated as a powder to be mixed in hot or cold water (or any non-carbonated liquid) and is delivered in individual dose packets.  Always follow the recommendations of your healthcare professional and never discontinue prescribed medications without the advice and direct oversight of your physician.

It is recommended that women who become pregnant while using Ovasitol®PLUS should switch to standard Ovasitol for the duration of pregnancy.  This is because Ovasitol®PLUS contains a chromium supplement, not recommended during pregnancy.  Ask your internist, family doctor, endocrinologist, or gynecologist about Ovasitol® and Ovasitol®PLUS inositols.  You may be pleasantly surprised by your doctor's response.
