If enough D-mannose is present in the urine to cover the bacterial arms, docking (attachment) of the bacteria to the bladder is inhibited (blocked) and infection is less likely.
Mannose One™ is the natural nonprescription low-cost alternative to antibiotic pharmaceuticals commonly prescribed for the prevention, suppression, and treatment of recurrent UTIs. Likewise a randomized placebo controlled study of over 300 women suffering urinary infection found that women using daily D-mannose had a markedly reduced incidence of recurrent infection as compared to women using placebo. The same study found that women using D-mannose also had fewer UTIs as compared to women using a daily prophylactic antibiotic.
When compared to women using suppressive antibiotics, women using D-mannose had a statistically similar rate of recurrent infection, suggesting that d-mannose supplementation may approach equivalent results as compared with antibiotics, with the advantage of few side effects. A 2021 summary review of the medical literature suggested that D-mannose "represents a promising non-antibiotic prevention strategy" for recurrent urinary tract infections.
